  • Participants will describe standards of care of the dying when EKR started her work and what motivated her to work with dying patients.
  • Participants will describe several barriers EKR encountered in her efforts to change the treatment of the dying and how she was able to face and overcome these barriers.
  • Participants will be able to describe how the treatment of the dying has evolved over time.
  • Participants will describe the reasons for the development of the Five Stages.
  • Participants will be able to describe stages of grief and EKR’s philosophy on how these stages apply to coping with grief and loss.
  • Participants will describe the role of listening and factors affecting listening in work with the dying.
  • Participants will be able to describe changes over time in the doctor -patient relationship and how EKR contributed to this.
  • Participants will describe hope as a reaction to dying and provide an example of such
  • Participants will describe how family are included in work with dying patients.
  • Participants will describe interactions between family and patient coping and ways of addressing.
  • Participants will describe how patient interviews inform work with dying patient and their families.
  • Participants will describe the role of guilt in coping with dying or the grief of losing a loved one.
  • Participants will describe some of the ways in which family members present themselves that may be related to grief but not immediately identified as grief.
  • Participants will identify the special needs of children in coping with the death of a loved one.
  • Participants will be able to describe the role of EKR on current medical bioethics.
